Chapter Ten
Zach took a seat at one of the tables in the darkest corner of Shanghaied and set his beer in front of him while he studied the staff and regular customers. After his encounter with Sophie in the alley, he and Boston had spent the better part of the evening keeping watch on the bar to see if Watters met with his contact outside with no luck. When Watters and his men left without contacting anyone outside, Zach had sent his crewman back to the Folly and decided to check out the crowd inside again.
More and more he was convinced that whoever was working with the German spies was also a go-between with Kurtâs crew and was connected with Shanghaied. But who?
Certainly not Slim or Javier. They werenât German and from what heâd learned of the Nazi propaganda, anyone not white was inferior to their German superiority. He doubted Constantine, with his Greek background, fit their ideals, either.
Percy rolled his chair through the room to deliver beers to a table full of stevedores, staying long enough to tell a joke or two and collect his fare before moving on to another table. When Zach had first come to Shanghaied and realized the barkeep allowed questionable activities to move through his establishment, Zach had assumed he was part of whatever plot was transpiring. But since meeting him and his daughter, heâd questioned if Percy really was involved or just happily turning a blind eye. Besides, there was no way he could maneuver that chair out to the desolated area the spies landed, much less help them move their raft on shore.
Sure, he could hire someone to do the work for him, even convince Connie or Javy to pick up the spies without letting them know why, but Zach doubted it. As hard as he was on his daughter and his staff, Percy truly cared about them, as well as his customersâwhich Zach suspected was why the man didnât mind a smuggler or fence doing business under the table in his place.
The two waitresses, Beulah and Lottie, were busy moving between the tables. Every so often one of them would pass by the table where Zachâs prime suspects sat huddled over their food and drink. Neither woman stayed long enough to cause him to worry. When the trio left, they didnât make even make eye contact with either woman.
There were some regulars from the shipyards that could be possible traitors. If so, Zach had his work cut out for him finding out which one it was. As they started to clear out, none of them seemed to be doing more than heading home for the night. And he couldnât recall any spending long periods of time with the trio of spies.
The door to the kitchen opened and Sophie stepped out. âKitchenâs closed until morning. Thirty minutes and weâre closing the bar, too,â she announced.
The few remaining customers groaned good naturedly and she laughed as she picked up dishes from one of the close-by tables.
